  1. Lobola Negotiation

Male representatives from the groom's family visit the bride's family to negotiate ilobola (bride wealth), traditionally in cattle. This solemn process happens across multiple meetings and its conclusion signals the marriage is approved. Guests attending later events will hear the outcome celebrated.

  2. Umembeso (Gift Giving)

The groom's family brings gifts of clothing and household items for the bride's entire family. It is a warm, colourful event where songs, ululating, and traditional Zulu dress (izigqizo and isicholo hats) dominate.

  3. Umabo (Traditional Wedding)

The formal traditional wedding where the bride covers herself in a blanket to mark the transition into her new family. She distributes gifts to the groom's family. Expect traditional singing, sorghum beer (umqombothi), and communal meals.

  4. White Wedding

Many Zulu couples follow the traditional ceremony with a Western-style church wedding and reception. Formal attire and a classic banquet — often blended with Zulu music — mark the celebration.
