Xeedho (Engagement Party)
A gathering of the bride's family where the groom's family makes a formal proposal. Gifts, prayers, and recitations from the Quran open the event. Women may sing traditional heello poetry in celebration.
Nikah
The Islamic marriage contract is signed in the presence of witnesses, a wali (guardian), and an Islamic officiant. Prayers and Quran recitations frame the ceremony. Modest, elegant dress is expected for guests.
Shaash-gelin (Bridal Unveiling)
A women-only gathering where the bride is dressed in traditional dirac garments, adorned with gold jewelry, and unveiled to her female guests. Henna, incense (subag iyo luban), and singing create a joyful and intimate atmosphere.
Walaqo / Dinner
A celebratory dinner for extended family and close friends. Expect a generous spread of bariis iskukaris (spiced rice with meat), cambuulo (bean dish), and maraq (broth). Oud music and praise songs fill the evening.
Reception
A larger mixed celebration with music, dancing, and a feast. Many Somali receptions feature Af-Somali songs and dirac-clad women leading the dancing. Dress elegantly — dirac, qamis, or formal Western wear all fit.
