Nigerian (Igbo)
Wine Carrying Ceremony (Igo Mmanya)
The bride carries a calabash of palm wine through the crowd to find the man she chooses as her husband. When she kneels before him and he drinks from the calabash, the union is publicly declared. Guests clap, sing, and celebrate this deeply symbolic moment.
Traditional Marriage (Igba Nkwu)
Families negotiate the bride price (ịdị ụlọ) and exchange gifts including kola nuts, native chalk (nzu), and palm wine. The compound fills with music, masquerades, and colourful George fabric — this is the core Igbo wedding event. Guests dressed in uli patterns or George wrappers blend seamlessly into the celebration.
Church Ceremony
A Christian ceremony in a church, common among Igbo families. Expect choir performances and spirited worship as the couple exchange vows before family and community.
Reception
A grand gathering with live highlife music, ofe onugbu (bitter leaf soup), oha soup, and celebratory speeches. Tables are laden with food — come hungry and ready to dance.
