Ethiopian / Eritrean

  1. Telosh (Engagement Blessing)

    Elders from both families gather to bless the couple, offer advice, and formally agree to the union. Tej (honey wine) and injera with rich stews are served. Traditional habesha kemis dresses and suits appear throughout the celebration.

  2. Melse / Gifte (Bridal Shower & Party)

    A women's celebration the night before the wedding where the bride is adorned, songs are sung, and women of the family dance and sing traditional tigrigna or amharic songs. Expect lively music, traditional dress, and an intimate family feel.

  3. Nikah or Church Ceremony

    Depending on the family's faith, a Muslim Nikah or an Ethiopian Orthodox / Protestant church ceremony. Orthodox ceremonies are particularly elaborate, involving crowns, candles, and long liturgical traditions.

  4. Wedding Reception

    A grand feast centered around a large communal injera platter with doro wat, tibs, and shiro. Live music — often eskista dancing — fills the room. Expect guests to dance in traditional habesha dress.
