Hair Combing Ceremony (上頭)
On the wedding morning, a respected elder (ideally someone with a happy family) combs the bride's hair while reciting blessings for longevity, fertility, and prosperity. A similar ritual is performed for the groom. An intimate and meaningful start to the wedding day.
Betrothal Gift Exchange (過大禮)
The groom's family presents the bride's family with gift baskets filled with roast pigs, gold jewelry, wedding cakes, and symbolic foods. The bride's family returns a portion to signify mutual goodwill.
Wedding Ceremony
A civil or Western-style ceremony with an exchange of vows and rings. Many Chinese weddings blend a Western ceremony with traditional elements.
Tea Ceremony (敬茶)
The couple kneels and serves tea to elder family members in order of seniority, showing respect. Elders respond with gifts of red envelopes (hongbao) and jewelry. A deeply meaningful ritual symbolizing gratitude and the merging of families.
Banquet Reception
A multi-course Chinese banquet — typically 10 or more dishes — featuring whole fish, lobster, Peking duck, and a roasted suckling pig. Speeches, yam sing toasts, and a lion dance all feature in this lavish celebration.
