Yemeni

  1. Khitba (Engagement)

    The groom's family visits the bride's family to formally propose. Prayers are recited, dates and qahwa (Yemeni coffee spiced with cardamom and ginger) are served, and the mahr (dower) is agreed upon. The gathering is solemn, warm, and family-centred.

  2. Henna Night (Laylat al-Henna)

    A joyful women's celebration where the bride and her female guests are adorned with intricate henna patterns. Traditional Yemeni songs (zaffa) fill the room, and the bride is dressed in the colourful tihami or hadhrami bridal garments for the first time.

  3. Nikah

    The Islamic marriage contract is signed before a sheikh, two witnesses, and both families. Quranic verses and prayers open and close the ceremony. Modest, elegant dress is expected for guests.

  4. Zaffa (Wedding Procession)

    The groom is escorted to the bride by a procession of family and friends to the sound of the mizmar (a traditional reed flute) and drums. Guests clap, sing, and dance as the party moves through the venue.

  5. Wedding Reception (Farah)

    A grand feast featuring saltah (Yemeni lamb stew), fahsa, mandi rice, and bint al-sahn (honey bread). Traditional Yemeni music — oud and percussion — accompanies the celebration. Men and women typically celebrate in separate areas, with each side filled with dancing and song.
