Nigerian (Yoruba)

  1. Introduction Ceremony (Ìdánilójú)

The groom's family arrives formally at the bride's family compound to declare their intention and ask for her hand. Elders exchange kolanut, palm wine, and speeches — expect vibrant aso-oke fabrics and a lively atmosphere. Guests are welcomed warmly and fed traditional dishes.

  2. Traditional Engagement (Engagement & Bride Price)

The groom's family presents a list of gifts — fabrics, jewelry, drinks, and items specific to the bride's family. After prayers and blessings, the bride pours and serves palm wine to her new family, officially sealing the engagement. Dress in aso-ebi or traditional Yoruba attire for this celebration.

  3. Nikah / Church Ceremony

A religious ceremony officiated by a Muslim imam or Christian pastor, depending on the couple's faith. Both families gather in prayer and witness the formal union. Smart or semi-formal attire is appropriate.

  4. Owambe Reception

The Yoruba reception is a legendary celebration — expect live music (often a jùjú or afrobeats band), professional 'spraying' of money on the couple, and a full spread of jollof rice, egusi soup, and suya. Wear your most colourful aso-oke or evening wear and prepare to dance.
