  1. Merisik (Enquiry)

    A small delegation from the groom's family visits the bride's family to quietly ask if she is available for marriage. This is a discreet first step before a formal proposal.

  2. Meminang (Formal Proposal)

    The groom's family presents hantaran (gift trays) to the bride's family and formally proposes. Gifts may include jewelry, a prayer set, cosmetics, and food. The bride's family accepts and sets the wedding date.

  3. Akad Nikah (Marriage Contract)

    The Islamic marriage contract is recited by the groom in a single breath before a kadi (registrar) and two male witnesses. Once accepted, the marriage is legally and religiously binding. Guests dress in traditional baju kurung or baju melayu.

  4. Bersanding (Enthronement Ceremony)

    The couple sits on a pelamin (ornate dais) as honored royalty for the day, receiving guests who shower them with flower petals and apply tepung tawar (blessing paste). Gamelan music or kompang drumming fills the air.

  5. Kenduri (Wedding Feast)

    A communal feast of nasi minyak (fragrant rice), rendang, ayam masak merah, and kuih (sweets). Neighbours and community members all are welcomed — it is a deeply communal celebration.
